NHS England stopped routine puberty blockers for gender incongruence in March 2024 after the Cass Review. A UK sale-and-supply order limits new puberty blockers for under-18s outside research, with review in 2027. No Act of Parliament has banned puberty blockers. The PATHWAYS trial of puberty blockers is ongoing; GOV.UK said recruitment was not due to begin until 1 August 2026. That trial is not routine NHS care.
Cass Review implementation. NHS England is developing a clinical pathway for adults who medically transitioned and later want to detransition.
The PATHWAYS research programme includes a clinical trial of puberty blockers (GnRH analogues). The Commons Library records that the trial is designed to recruit 226 children and young people under 15 years and 11 months. GOV.UK stated recruitment was not due to begin until 1 August 2026. That trial is ongoing research, not routine NHS care. No Act of Parliament has banned puberty blockers.
Schools detail
Separate from the puberty-blocker order, the Department for Education’s revised Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education statutory guidance is in force from 1 September 2026. Official guidance says pupils should be taught the facts and the law about biological sex and gender reassignment, and that schools should not endorse a contested view or teach it as fact — including that they should not teach as fact that all people have a gender identity. Schools should avoid language and activities that repeat gender stereotypes and should not suggest social transition is a simple solution to distress. This is statutory RSHE curriculum guidance for England. It is a Schools restriction on this parent card — never rebadged CSE in schools. Wales’s mandatory RSE Code is listed on the Wales card as CSE in schools. Scotland stays a separate Restricted medical card.
