On 19 December 2025, Queensland’s Minister for Health and Ambulance Services published the Independent Review Advice Report (Professor Ruth Vine) on Stage 1 and Stage 2 hormones for children and adolescents with gender dysphoria in Queensland public hospitals, and announced Cabinet’s decision.
What Cabinet decided. The government will continue the pause on initiating Stage 1 and Stage 2 hormone therapies for minors with gender dysphoria in the public health system until results of the UK PATHWAYS trial are expected in 2031. Minister Nicholls said existing patients will continue to receive treatment from Children’s Health Queensland, and that children with gender dysphoria will continue to have access to non-medical interventions, including mental health and wellbeing support.
The Minister said the review found the evidence base for Stage 1 and Stage 2 hormone therapy for young people with gender dysphoria is limited, with a paucity of evidence about other long-term risks or benefits.
This is not a national Australian ban. It is a Queensland public-hospital pause, extending the 28 October 2025 ministerial direction (QH-MD-002). Private care is not this announcement.
