On September 18, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced agreements with New York University Langone Hospitals and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center that resolve investigations into potential federal-law violations from sex-rejecting procedures on children.
Under the agreements, NYU and UPMC will stop providing these interventions to minors — including puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical procedures. NYU agreed to pay $8.5 million and UPMC $950,000 as part of the resolutions.
DOJ says the announcement follows similar agreements with Mount Sinai Health System, Texas Children’s Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and Connecticut Children’s Hospital. The Civil Division’s nationwide investigation looks at possible Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, False Claims Act, and other federal health-care law issues, including billing practices.
The claims resolved are allegations only. There has been no determination of liability. NYU and UPMC have denied all allegations.
