On 11 December 2025, Alberta’s Protecting Alberta’s Children Statutes Amendment Act (Bill 9) received Royal Assent and took effect that day. This is Alberta only, not a Canada-wide ban.
What the official page says it does. Bill 9 invokes the notwithstanding clauses in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Alberta Bill of Rights, and the Alberta Human Rights Act so that specified existing laws “cannot be struck down by the courts.” Those shielded provisions include:
- sections of the *Health Professions Act* that prohibit gender-reassignment surgery for children under 18 and puberty blockers and hormone treatments for the purpose of gender reassignment to children under 16;
- specified *Education Act* parental-notice and consent rules on names, pronouns, and teaching on gender identity, sexual orientation, or human sexuality;
- the *Fairness and Safety in Sport Act* and regulation on female amateur competitive sport.
Hormone rules for 16- and 17-year-olds in Ministerial Order 31/2025 took effect later, on 7 January 2026. Bill 9 shields named statutes; it is not a new nationwide medical ban.
